A Brief Introduction to Corpora and the Lingonet VideoCorpus by Dr Mike Nelson

Lingonet VideoCorpus is a collection of videos where nine British persons discuss 15 topics of common interest. Each topic has its own section in the corpus. The topics are: animal rights, corporal punishment, equality, Europe, the monarchy, morality, science, welfare, crime, the environment, gun law, homelessness, politicians, the power of the press and violence.

There are about 10 hours of video-recorded discussion and about 75,000 words. Each topic is divided into 12 to 20 shorter segments, each containing comments by one participant. The duration of each video segment is only a couple of minutes. The Lingonet VideoCorpus exposes the learner to authentic language with all its hesitations, self-corrections, syntactic slips and reliance on idioms. If necessary, the learner can also read the text while listening to understand it better.

The Lingonet VideoCorpus offers a variety of teaching and learning opportunities.

Feedback and comments from users:

“One other useful feature of this superb program is the link to the downloadable and extremely interesting document by Mike Nelson that introduces and explains corpora on a non-technical level along with how to make good use of corpus analysis both as an independent learner and as a classroom teacher.”
